I spoke to a college class of medical students and the following is the conversation between the professor and one of her students:
Professor
I am wrapping up my class with the students and one of the last projects for them to complete is a presentation of take aways to start a career in healthcare. Today one of the students closed her presentation with this.

"I am going to make a commitment to treat every patient I come in contact with as if they are my Darrell. I also want to make a commitment, no matter how busy I will take time."
Professor
YOU MADE A DIFFERENCE!!!  Thank You so much!!

I often think of how your story of survival inspired me and ignited a journey that never would have been possible without you! Hearing your story made me want to work all the harder to make the care for our patients the very best possible. As a result, I’ve had the opportunity to speak for the OHA, CDC, and Sepsis Alliance. Friday, I was asked to speak for the American Hospital Association. All of this shows me that Summa has been able to greatly improve how we care for our patients. We’ve sent many more people home safely with their families. I tear up every time I think about that. It means more than I could ever express knowing that something we’re doing makes such an impact.

I mention you in my talk with our residents every month. I want them to know what they do is so much more than just rote care, I want them to think of each patient as a person with people who need them, love them, and wait for them to come home. So, as I have told you – thank you for answering God’s call to share your personnel journey, even though it has to be painful reliving some parts of it. You impacted everyone in the room at Summa when you shared during our sepsis awareness week. I know you do the same wherever you go. I know I don’t have to tell you that your horrible illness led to a greater purpose – God can always create something beautiful from pain and suffering. You are a shining example! I just wanted to say “Happy Sepsis Survivor’s Week”. Never forget you – my favorite survivor.
